Mohamed Yusuf Said – Mr Bakayle, Elected Chairperson of the Somali Diaspora Journalists Association

 

On 20 February 2026, the Somali Diaspora Journalists Association (SDJA) held its leadership election online, bringing together approximately 150 Somali journalists living and working in different countries around the world. As part of the election process, 15 members of the association gathered in person in Brussels, Belgium.

During the meeting, Somali journalist Mohamed Yusuf Said – Mr Bakayle was elected Chairperson of SDJA. Members also elected a Secretary and a 15-member Leadership Board to work alongside the Chairperson in leading, strengthening and developing the organization.

The election marked an important milestone in SDJA’s efforts to establish a strong and representative platform for Somali journalists living in diaspora communities. The newly elected leadership will focus on strengthening cooperation among members, expanding professional networks and representing the interests of Somali diaspora journalists at national and international levels.

SDJA connects, represents and supports Somali journalists living and working around the world. The association is committed to promoting ethical and responsible journalism, defending press freedom, improving journalist safety and creating opportunities for professional development.

Under its new leadership, SDJA also aims to build partnerships with media institutions, civil society organizations, technology companies and other relevant stakeholders. Particular attention will be given to addressing misinformation, online harassment, threats against journalists and other challenges affecting Somali media professionals.

The Chairperson, Secretary and Leadership Board will work together to expand the association’s membership, strengthen its institutional capacity and provide Somali diaspora journalists with a united and influential professional platform.
