Somaliland: Parliament Approves New NEC, Opposition Rejects

The Somaliland House of Representatives have passed a motion of confidence in the new National Elections Commission, (NEC), but, the two opposition parties, Waddani and UCID have rejected this motion.

The new commission which is set to replaced the previous commission, who had in a five year tenure, held one national elections, has already caused controversy.

Both Waddani and UCID have rejected the new commission partly because of the nominees from the Kulmiye party.

It is not clear whether the administration of President Muse Bihi Abdi will reconsider their nominees or whether the opposition party will acquiesce to the new
commission.

Somaliland’s parliamentary and local elections are severely overdue and this latest setback will make it even more harder to reach a consensus in order to hold the vote.
