Somaliland: UN Secretary General; Talks Between Somaliland & Somalia, Nowhere.

The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guteress in his briefing to the Security Council on the Horn of Africa region, mentioned Somaliland only in relation to the prospective talks with Somalia and issues pertaining to perceived media restrictions by the administration of President Muse Bihi Abdi.

In a brief presentation the Secretary General referred to the meeting in February, between President Muse Bihi and Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abby Ahmed, in which one of the points to emerge from the meeting was “Somaliland’s willingness to participate in the new political atmosphere in the region being championed by the Ethiopian PM”

However, the weak administration in Mogadishu misunderstood and sent out a hasty press release to the effect that”Somaliland agreed to work under the federal dispensation” which was an incorrect interpretation of the communique and an unlikely scenario.

The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guteress, also touched on the issue of press freedom and restrictions in Somaliland pertaining the dispute between the administration of President Muse Bihi and Foore newspaper, which is still under adjudication.

There were no mention of the other projects carried out in Somaliland by UN agencies, the political situation, drought and other human crisis.

It is quite clear in the presentation that the UN is “all in ” on Somalia, and the continued failures in that blighted country are also the continued failures of the United Nations.
