Somaliland: Obituary Haji Abdi Hussein Yusuf, “Cabdi Waraabe”

Haji Abdi Hussein Yusuf, one of Somaliland’s wisest and best known elders has died. Known throughout the Somali community as “Cabdi Waraabe” was thought to have been over a hundred years old at the time of his passing.
Born on the outskirts of Hargeisa in the early part of the 20th century, the date is unknown since records were not kept at the time, Haji Abdi Hussein Yusuf began life as a nomad and has always considered himself a nomad.
His father was a community elder and a chief, but like most children, the late Haji began attending Quran school and to look after his family livestock.
Haji Abdi Hussein Yusuf, like most Somali youngsters at his age,  began to look after the smaller flock of his families livestock, the goats and the sheep. As he grew older, he was entrusted to look after the camels, often taking them on long drives to more fertile range with water. These camel treks lasted days and at times went as far the Hawd region.
Haji Abdi Hussein Yusuf was always blessed with a strong and serene personality that served him well as he become older and set out in his adult life.  A veritable treasure chest of Somali folklore, history, literature, Haji Abdi Hussein Yusuf,  was to play a significant role in the rebirth of Somaliland after the ill-fated union with Somalia.
A natural peacemaker, Haji Abdi Hussein Yusuf, helped to resolve many political and social crisis in Somaliland. As a member of the Somaliland House of Elders, “Guurti”, he helped to resolve issues ranging from internal armed conflicts, to land and livestock disputes to political impasses.  A wise head and a superb natural intellect, Haji Cabdi Waraabe, will forever be known as a peacemaker.
Oodweynenews.com would like to take this opportunity to send our condolences to his immediate family, friends, the people of Somaliland and to all the Somali people across the globe on his passing. It had been a long, fruitful and blessed life.
